John McCain talked big game the other day, like the quintessential cowboy in the classic western in the white hat who told us all: "Fear not, dear citizens, I shall ride into town and bring the government to its senses." He tried to convince us that by suspending his campaign (while his attack ads on Barack Obama have continued airing) and postponing a presidential debate, he was being magnanamous and putting the country first. Novel idea, considering his political party never did in its eight years of ineptitude. So what did McCain do at meetings in Washington (where, by the way, Obama was)? More listening than the leading he's tried to convince the country he's doing. Here's a detailed analysis in the New York Times. Face it: the closest McCain could ever come to being a maverick is if he ran the courts with the Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki. Well, maybe he'll do that, as the NBA season starts right around Election Day. Hopefully by Nov. 5, McCain will have lots of free time on his hands.
